Twin Drakes (Ebonroc & Flamegor)

Last updated: 7/21/26

This fight is completely different from Era, and is identical to SoM, but it’s not overly difficult. It’s just a 2-boss version of Four Horseman from Naxx.

The bosses should be tanked in opposite sides of the room, one to the far left and the other towards Chromaggus’ door.

Shadow Flame Mechanics

Many bosses in Blackwing Lair have a breath attack that deals Shadow Flame damage. Shadow Flame damage is special because it has a secondary effect: if a player takes Shadow Flame damage and they are not wearing an Onyxia Scale Cloak (or in SoD, alternatively wielding Suzerain), then that player will also receive a secondary DoT which will kill them.

Tanks must be sure to equip their cloaks before pulling!

Brand of Shadow & Brand of Flame

Every 15 seconds, Ebonroc casts Brand of Shadow and Flamegor casts Brand of Flame. These both put stacking debuffs on all players in a 50-yard radius around the boss that causes you to take exponentially more damage each time it stacks. These stacks will cause 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, then 8000 damage for 1-6 stacks, respectively. The only way to drop stacks is to get far enough away from each respective boss.

For the raid, get to 3-4 stacks of one debuff, then switch to the other boss until you’ve got 3-4 stacks of the other debuff (by which time the first debuff will have fallen off), then switch back, rinse and repeat. To help divide damage, you might want to have all melee start on one boss and all ranged start on the other. Split healers accordingly so there are always a couple healers covering the raiders on each boss.

Tanks can get up to 4-5 stacks but must still swap. A third tank will allow the tanks to juggle stacks. When you pull, have both main tanks on each boss with the third tank standing out of combat. Then, when the Ebonroc tank hits 3-4 stacks, have the third tank move in to Ebonroc and taunt, have the old Ebonroc tank move to Flamegor and taunt, then the old Flamegor tank moves to Ebonroc and picks him up once the current Ebon tank’s stacks get too high, rinse and repeat. It is better for the tanks to swap often but cleanly once they have the pattern down, than for them to hold the boss too long and risk an offtank getting both stacks while waiting around.

If your total raid damage (with cleave) is high enough, for instance if you brought 40 players, you may wish to stack the bosses and burn them down as quickly as possible. While this is much easier, it is also very risky. Because every raider will be receiving both debuff stacks, there will be raid-wide instances of 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 damage at the 15sec, 30sec, 45sec, 1min, and 1min15sec marks, respectively.

If you decide to go this route, the bosses should be spaced very slightly apart and the raid should stand on their tails. This ensures you have a tight, predictable direction for Wing Buffet to miss all players.

If you have a Priest with Power Word: Barrier, the 8000 damage tick can be reduced to 6000 damage, making it potentially survivable, giving you up to 1min30sec. Note: The description of this ability claims it’s party-only, but it is actually raid-wide.

Wing Buffet

Roughly every 30 seconds, the twin drakes will turn to face each other and cast Wing Buffet in each others’ direction. Any players caught in this frontal attack will be knocked far away.

While not a guaranteed death for DPS, this can cause them to unexpectedly gain a fresh Brand stack from the opposite drake when they may have expected their stacks to soon fall off. If that happens, it is best to simply run out of range of both bosses for awhile to let both stacks drop before re-engaging.

For tanks however, Wing Buffet must be avoided at all costs because it completely drops threat, just like on Firemaw, which will cause chaos. Tanks must make sure they are not positioning themselves between the two bosses at all times.

Obsidian Fury

Both bosses must die at roughly the same time. When one boss dies, the other will be buffed with Obsidian Fury, doubling their damage output until they die as well. Additionally, after a short time, the dead boss will revive with a small amount of HP and must be put down again. Be sure to call for DPS to slow their damage on the lower health boss as needed.

Red Light, Green Light

Periodically, the bosses will cast Stop!, which is like a “red light”. It lasts for 5 seconds. While you have the debuff you MUST stop moving, or else you will take 500 shadow damage every 0.5 sec that you’re moving. After it falls off, there will be a lull, and then the bosses will instead cast Go!, which is the exact opposite - for 5 seconds, you must keep moving or else you’ll take 500 shadow damage every 0.5 sec that you stand still.

If running Black, I’d advise swapping at 3 stacks, since a Stop! happening mid-swap could cause you to gain another stack. Having 3 and gaining a 4th stack is not fatal, but having 4 and gaining a 5th stack can be.
